What is synchronicity, also know as strange, amazing coincidence (chance, conspiracy, prophecy, ...)
Dr. Lee Warren Plim Report

"The uncanny coincidence. The unlikely conjunction of events. The startling serendipity. Who hasn’t had it happen in their life? You think of someone for the first time in years, and run into them a few hours later. An unusual phrase you’d never heard before jumps out at you three times in the same day. On a back street in a foreign country, you bump into a college roommate. A book falls off the shelf at the bookstore and it’s exactly what you need." 1

Have you ever had some of these incidents happen to you? These mysterious events, we commonly call coincidences, are more powerful and meaningful to our lives then we realize. They are testimonies of a universal spirit that is operating and communicating with all its creatures, anywhere, anytime and often simultaneously. The whole universe is more keenly linked and tied together than we can imagine and this is typified by Man which is a microcosm of the universe (which is the macrocosm). Furthermore, there is some unseen force or power that is coordinating the simultaneity of events. As Hippocrates put it:

"There is one common flow, one common breathing, all things are in sympathy. The whole organism and each one of its parts are working in conjunction for the same purpose... the great principle extends to the extremest part, and from the extremest part it returns to the great principle, to the one nature, being and not-being." 2

What is the intent of this article?

In this article we will examine where the term "synchronicity" came from, what that concept means, talk about principles upon which it is based, and give examples. We will find that synchronistic events have been going on from ancient to modern times. We will discover that the force behind these events is SPIRIT (YAHWEH) who is orchestrating our life’s journey and causing coincidences to occur in our lives which thereby validate that there is a universal "flow" or spirit we can all tap into. It is possible to become one with this "flow," to be lead and guided by it in every phase of our lives. Finally, we will ponder what these experiences can teach us and how they can enrich our lives. This article is not intended to reproduce the exact content of the lecture on the same subject given at the July 1998 PLIM RETREAT held in White Cloud, Michigan, but will give the essence of that lecture.

How are coincidences defined?

Webster’s Dictionary defines coincidence thus:

Coincidence - 1. A coinciding 2. An accidental occurrence of related or identical events, ideas, etc., at the same time. Coincide - 1. To take up the same place in space. 2. To occur at the same time.

Harper’s Encyclopedia of Mystical and Paranormal Experience, defines synchronicity as:

"The unifying principle behind meaningful coincidences. Psychiatrist Carl G. Jung termed Synchronicity ‘an acausal connecting principle’ that links seemingly unrelated and unconnected events. The concept is integral to Eastern thought, but in Western thought runs contrary to cause and effect. In the West, ‘coincidences’ are popularly discounted as ‘chance happenings.’ The concept of synchronicity was developed largely by Carl G. Jung, who credited Albert Einstein as his inspiration." 3

How did the term synchronicity originate?

A famous Swedish psychologist/physicist named Carl Jung (1875-1961) first coined the term "synchronicity" to explain what he called "meaningful coincidences " that are not related by any causal events. His concept of synchronicity came about through the many baffling coincidences his patients shared with him in his practice, especially as he began to realize that the occurrences went beyond what could be attributed to mere chance. During his lifetime he had some paranormal experiences of his own.

Did Einstein inspire Jung?

Jung was a contemporary of the great physicist, Albert Einstein. Apparently, Carl Jung was sparked to develop his ideas on synchronicity through his encounters with Albert Einstein. One account of this goes as follows:

"...Jung reveals the roots of his idea of synchronicity as being in a series of dinners with the redoubtable Albert Einstein in Zurich, Switzerland, between the years 1909 and 1913... For many years Jung couldn’t get these beguiling exchanges with Einstein out of his mind, nor the intriguing implications they had for the numerous stories of baffling coincidences that his clients were revealing to him in his consultation room, his arcane studies, and most troubling of all, in his life." 4

What is Jung’s view of synchronicity?

Jung’s own explanation of the concept of synchronicity is as follows:

" As its etymology shows, this term has something to do with time, or to be more accurate, with a kind of simultaneity. Instead of simultaneity we could use the concept of a meaningful coincidence of two or more events, where something other than the probability of chance is involved." (Synchronicity, An Acausal Connecting Principle, by C G Jung, from the article "On Synchronicity", Appendix, pg. 104)

What did Jung state about the chance occurrence of coincidences?

Jung had been studying synchronicity since the middle twenties, when he was investigating the phenomena of the collective unconscious and kept on coming across connections which he simply could not explain: "as chance groupings or ‘runs.’ What I found were ‘coincidences’ which were connected so meaningfully that their ‘chance’ concurrence would represent a degree of improbability that would have to be expressed by an astronomical figure." Synchronicity, An Acausal Connecting Principle, by C G Jung, pg. 21.

Did an insect fulfill a dream?

One of the synchronicity episodes that really intrigued Carl Jung occurred with a patient recounting her dream of a golden scarab beetle. A young woman that Jung had been treating told him of a dream in which she had been given a golden scarab. He was sitting with his back to a closed window while she told him the dream.

Suddenly he heard a gentle tapping and turned to see a flying insect knocking against the window-pane from outside. Jung opened the window and caught the creature in the air as it flew in. The insect closely resembled a golden scarab. In actuality it was a scarabaeid beetle, the common rose-chafer (Cetonia aurata).

Normally, such insects would not come into a dark room, but at the same moment the patient mentioned the beetle she had been given in her dream, this beetle appeared at Jung’s window. He was quite astonished at the coincidental timing and admitted that nothing like it ever happened to me before or since. Synchronicity, An Acausal Connecting Principle, by C G Jung ,Pg. 22.

Do dreams come true?

Another fascinating synchronicity story related by Carl Jung described a dream of a student friend that came true. His friend’s father had promised him a trip to Spain if he passed his final examination. His friend was so excited about his upcoming trip that he began to dream about being in Spain. He saw himself walking through a Spanish city in a street that led to a square with a Gothic cathedral. He then turned a corner, into another street where he saw an elegant carriage drawn by two cream-coloured horses. When Jung’s friend woke up, he told a group of companions at dinner about the dream. Shortly afterwards, he successfully passed his examinations, and went to Spain. While he stood on one of the streets, he recognized the city of his dream. He was astonished to find the square, the cathedral, and the carriage with the two cream-coloured horses. Everything he saw in real life exactly corresponded to the dream images. Synchronicity, An Acausal Connecting Principle, by C G Jung, pg. 106.

Upon what universal principles/concepts is synchronicity based?

The principle of synchronicity is based on the concept that everything in the universe has some kind of correspondence one to the other. There is a "classical idea of the sympathy of all things."  5 There is a link, there is a bond, so to speak, and even so-called inanimate objects have a form of communication. In other words the whole universe is a living breathing entity and its various life forms, in all the kingdoms (animal, plant, mineral, human, etc.) are not as removed from each other as previously thought. In support of Hippocrates (** see introductory quote on Page 1 of this article ) Carl Jung said: "The universal principle is found even in the smallest particle, which therefore corresponds to the whole." Synchronicity, An Acausal Connecting Principle, by C G Jung, pg. 74.

Is there a scientific theory to support synchronicity?

"... They are finding that the isolation and separation of objects from each other is more apparent than real; at deeper levels, everything —atoms, cells, molecules, plants, animals, people — participates in a sensitive, flowing web of information. Physicists have shown, for example, that if two photons are separated, no matter by how far, a change in one creates a simultaneous change in the other." From: A Wink From the Cosmos by Meg Lundstrom ,www.flowpower.com/synchro.htm, a version of this appeared in Intuition Magazine, May-June 1996 pg. 1.

Is everyone seeking harmony?

Many Eastern philosophies have had a concept of SYNCHRONICITY before the western mind set fully accepted it.

"These coincidences, which Jung termed synchronicity, are sure signs you are in the flow; Flow is a harmony of being that has been sought after through the centuries in the spiritual traditions of the world. In the West, flow has been linked to trust, surrender, unconditional love, the grace of God. In the East, it has been linked to the Tao, the underlying interconnectedness of the Universe. In our lives, flow is obvious in those times when things happen effortlessly, everything falls into place, obstacles melt away, and our timing is perfect. In those times, we feel a deep sense of harmony and underlying order. We know we are in the right place, at the right time, doing exactly the right thing." From the Internet: www.flowpower.com/morebook.htm (about the book, The Power of Flow: Practical Ways to Transform Your Life with Meaningful Coincidence, by Charlene Belitz and Meg Lundstrom.

Are there synchronicities in the Bible?

An example of synchronicity can be found in looking at events that transpired when the Apostle Peter was given instructions by way of a vision to preach to the Gentiles. Simultaneously another party, a Gentile, was also being shown in a vision that he should send men to call for Peter. Acts 10th chapter verses 1-8, which is partially quoted below, show how Cornelius had his vision.

Why did Cornelius seek Peter?

"There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius , a centurion of the Italian band, ....He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.....And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter. He lodgeth with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the seaside; he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.

And when the angel who spoke unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of those that waited on him continually;....he sent them to Joppa."

What did Peter see in his vision?

In Acts the ninth through the seventeenth verses Peter’s vision is described. He was on a housetop at the sixth hour when he fell into a trance. He had a vision of all manner of creeping things including animals that his Hebrew heritage forbid him to eat, being considered unclean (Lev. 11th Chap.). Peter did not understand immediately the essential message of this vision. Yahweh was showing Peter that the Holy Spirit had now cleansed all of mankind and this was symbolically represented by the animals which God told Peter he had cleansed. While Peter pondered the meaning of this, the men who were sent from Cornelius to seek out Peter arrived. (Acts 10: 17-18).

The SPIRIT told Peter that the men were looking for him, to go with them, doubting nothing.

"Then Peter went down to the men who were sent unto him from Cornelius, and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek. What is the cause for which ye are come?

"And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a righteous man, and one that feareth Elohim (God), and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from Elohim (God) by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee." (Acts 10: 21-22).

Who coordinates coincidences?

In this article we wanted to mention the coincidences involved in Peter’s mission of preaching to the Gentiles to show the beauty of SPIRIT speaking to people and coordinating events without their being aware of it. Neither Peter nor Cornelius knew that the other had received corresponding or coinciding information to get the two parties together.

There was no modern form of communication back then, but Spirit does not need that, for it is able to speak to its creatures by dream, by vision, by a voice. If you were to take yourself outside of this incident for a moment, you can see that to Peter and Cornelius their meeting would seem a coincidence. Neither one of them knew that the other had received "instructions" independently whereby they would meet for an important purpose.

Have many people experienced synchronicity or so-called "coincidences" from ancient to modern times?

In Ancient India a shared dream foretells real life as a king dreams of a bride and the bride dreams of him. These two total strangers saw each other in a dream and fell in love at that moment. King Vikramaditya had the advantage of seeing his beloved first in a painting that a painter had made from a travel book.

That night the king saw her again in a dream. He saw himself crossing a sea and entering a beautiful city to met a princess named Malayavati, the girl he had seen in the picture. He had fallen in love with her at first sight. They were married and entered the bridal chamber to consummate their marriage. At the height of their lovemaking he was interrupted when a watchman woke him up. The king was outraged and banished the watchman. The king was convinced that the girl existed, though he had no idea how to find her. He told his friend about the dream and was able to described the location of his beloved. Now that he have seen Malayavati in a picture and in a dream, he could not live without her.

The king’s friend had the king to draw a map of the city on a piece of cloth that he showed to everyone he met. One day a poet came from far away and told a story almost identical to the king’s. He said that in the city of Malaya, the king’s daughter, Malayavati, dreamed of her beloved. In her dream, she married the man and entered the bridal chamber to consummate the marriage, but was awakened at dawn by her chambermaid. In a rage she banished the maid, and vowed that she would kill herself if she did not find that man in six months. Five months had now passed. When the king heard the poet’s tale that was similar to his own, he was sure he had found his beloved.

Just as the princess was about to kill herself, the king found her. She recognized him as her dream-bridegroom and she appeared to Vikramaditya as he saw her in the picture and in his dream. He thanked the gods for his good forture and he took her back with him to marry. Soul Moments: Marvelous Stories of Synchronicity - Meaningful Coincidences from a Seemingly Random World, by Phil Cousineau pg. 46-47.

What are some modern day beliefs and encounters with synchronicity?

The Celestine Prophecy, by James Redfield, although a fictional story has a basis in modern synchronicity. In his book, James Redfield gives meaning to coincidences and considers them a step toward gaining a series of insights. A brief excerpt from the book gives a good example of this:

" Okay," I said. "What is this experience we’re looking for? What is the First Insight?"...

"This is hard to explain," she said. "But the priest put it this way. He said the First Insight occurs when we become conscious of the coincidences in our lives."

She leaned toward me. " Have you ever had a hunch or intuition concerning something you wanted to do? Some course you wanted to take in your life? And wondered how it might happen? And then, after you had half forgotten about it and focused on other things, you suddenly met someone or read something or went somewhere that led to the very opportunity you envisioned?

"Well," she continued, "according to the priest, these coincidences are happening more and more frequently and that, when they do, they strike us as beyond what would be expected by pure chance. They feel destined, as though our lives had been guided by some unexplained force." The Celestine Prophecy, by James Redfield pgs. 6-7.

Can a dream and reality occur simultaneously?

The following is an interesting encounter with synchronicity called "Night of Terror" from Soul Moments: Marvelous Stories of Synchronicity - Meaningful Coincidences from a Seemingly Random World, by Phil Cousineau pgs. 72-74. A woman named Joanne Warfield dreamed that someone was chasing her. Her dream was so real that only when she woke up did she realize it had been a nightmare.

In her dream her throat ached and her heart pounded excruciatingly as she gasped for air. Her blood was rushing so loud that she was sure the madman stalking her with a gun would detect her in her third hiding place in the shed. She had no idea who he was or what he wanted with her.

Joanne mustered enough courage to run from the shed into the main house again. She slipped in through a side door and quietly locked it so her predator would not hear it click shut.

Her heart began to slow down and she began to gasp for breath as felt the wall against her back. She fell down in a heap. Suddenly, she heard the screeching of tires in her driveway. She drug herself up to the window only to see through a slit in the curtain, the maniac in the driver’s seat heading straight for the house at full speed! His eyes appeared as great dark holes with flames flashing out of them....

She ran out the back door toward the orchard thinking that if he were going to crash into the house, then certainly she would have a better chance running in the open. She knew her life was at stake and tried to ignore the aching pain in her throat and limbs....She thought that she was surely going to die!

At that moment she bolted upright in bed stricken with terror. Her heart thundered in her chest and her throat was dry and grating. It took her several minutes to realize that she was home and had just experienced a terrifying nightmare. The fear lingered; and she knew this was no ordinary dream. She was so shaken by the experience that she made herself get up, have some tea, and walk around to stay awake. She turned on music and sang out loud to change the mood so there would be no chance of reentering what was a very real, frightening place. It was 2:00 A.M. After an hour or so, she somehow managed to get back to sleep.

Two days later, her mother who lived several states away called and related a horrifying story. Her sister’s crazy husband had chased her sister and mother with a gun. They frantically tried to find a place to hide. They hid in the shed, then in a car, where they slept all night in the pouring rain. They were truly terrified for their lives.

It happened at 2:00 A.M on the very night of Joanne’s own nightmare.

Can two people have the same thought at the same time?

How is it that one or more modern day songwriters come up with the same music composition, so much so that one thinks the other is guilty of copyright infringement, even though they have never met, never communicated, and may even reside on totally opposite sides of the globe? One possible explanation of this can be found in the following synchronicity interlude. You will find that there are musicians who say they have dreams about the music they write.

An example called "The Dreaming," follows from Soul Moments: Marvelous Stories of Synchronicity - Meaningful Coincidences from a Seemingly Random World, Phil Cousineau pg. 66.

A woman named Valerie Andrews received a melody while she was dreaming. She had studied piano and composition and, in the late 1970’s, she dreamed that Lizst had met Chopin in Paris and together they had composed a certain piano piece. When she woke up, she remembered it to be a kind of funeral march and played the first few bars at the piano.

About three or four years later she was working in London at a job totally unrelated to music. She was promoting the first women’s international marathon and held a dinner with a public relations firm hired to promote the event. To her surprise, she found herself seated next to Rosemary Brown, the English psychic and pianist, who had just recorded a selection of Chopin’s compositions she had channeled. Her son had come to the restaurant with a young woman who was writing our press releases. She and Rosemary spent the night talking about the idiosyncratic phases of Chopin and Liszt, and Valerie told her all about the funeral dirge she had received in her dream.

Rosemary told her to keep listening because that was exactly how she received her melodies.

What famous coincidences exist between Abraham Lincoln and JFK?

Coincidences often appear as a repetition of events, although not played out in the exact same way each time yet having an eerie quality in the way they correspond such as the coincidences in events between Abraham Lincoln (16th President of the U.S.) and JFK (John Fitzgerald Kennedy - 35th President of the U.S.) The following coincidences can be found at "The Lincoln/Kennedy Coincidences" site. http://www.stevenpockett.com/presidents.html.

Lincoln was elected President in 1860, while Kennedy was elected President in 1960. Lincoln’s successor - Andrew Johnson - was born in 1808, while Kennedy’s successor - Lyndon Johnson - was born in 1908. Lincoln’s killer - John Wilkes Booth - was born in 1839, while Kennedy’s killer - Lee Harvey Oswald - was born in 1939. The names Lincoln and Kennedy each contain seven letters. Lincoln’s secretary was called Kennedy, while Kennedy’s secretary was called Lincoln. Lincoln’s and Kennedy’s successors both had the surname Johnson. The names Andrew Johnson and Lyndon Johnson each contain thirteen letters. The names John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald each contain fifteen letters.

Lincoln and Kennedy were both killed on a Friday. Both were killed in the presence of their wives. Both were shot from behind and in the head. Booth shot Lincoln in a theatre and hid in a warehouse, while Oswald shot Kennedy from a warehouse and hid in a theatre. Both assassins were killed before being brought to trial.

Lincoln and Kennedy were both directly concerned with Civil Rights. Booth and Oswald were both Southerners favoring unpopular ideas.

Does synchronicity have anything to do with intuition?

"At first blush, synchronicity and intuition seem to be separate phenomena.

Synchronicity happens "out there;" against the odds, something in the Universe seems to swing into place to answer an inner need we have. Intuition happens "in here": it’s an inner knowing, an ability to tune into knowledge in a nonrational, nonlinear way. We know something but we don’t know how we know it." From A Wink From the Cosmos by Meg Lundstrom pg. 2

"Yet the boundaries get fuzzy very quickly. Jung’s definition of synchronicity clearly incorporates precognition and clairvoyance, which, by some people’s definition, are also types of intuition: they are certainly inner knowing."

From A Wink From the Cosmos by Meg Lundstrom pg. 2

"... In practice, synchronicity and intuition sometimes seem so intertwined that it’s hard to tell where one leaves off and the other begins."

Did synchronicity or intuition present a pair of needed shoes?

The following story is a good example of the relationship between synchronicity and intuition.

A woman named Shelley received a gift that she desperately needed in a very unusual way. She was sitting at Notre Dame in Paris resting her sore feet. She had not brought a comfortable pair of shoes from the States, and her limited budget wouldn’t allow her to buy another pair although her feet ached terribly.

Suddenly she felt prompted to walk out of the church and turn left. Following her inner promptings, she made several more turns to arrive at a square. To her surprise she saw a pair of brand new black boots with no signs of wear in exactly her size on top of a trash can. She knew the situation was perfect and had been arranged specifically for her. If the boots had been inside the trash can, she wouldn’t have pulled them out. If they had been worn before, she wouldn’t have put them on. They were also so stylish that she could never have afforded them herself!

Would this be a story of intuition or synchronicity? Intuition appeared to have led her to the boots. Synchronicity provided her with precisely what she needed. The Universe virtually handed her the boots. From A Wink From the Cosmos by Meg Lundstrom pg. 2.

Is intuition synchronicity in another form?

David Spangler, an author, teacher, and former guiding light of Findhorn, believes the two have many underlying similarities. "Intuition is another form of synchronicity: When I intuit something, there’s no apparent cause-and-effect relationship between my knowledge and how I got the knowledge;" he says. "Likewise, synchronicity is precipitated intuition: we know of a connection not inwardly but outwardly, through action and perception. In both cases, the pattern carries the same message: we live in a world more intricately and holistically organized than we may ever have previously supposed." From A Wink From the Cosmos by Meg Lundstrom pg. 2

Can you run a business on timely donations?

Some people have become so adept at following the "coincidences/synchronicities" in their lives as to become totally dependent on it, also linking it with their "Intuitive Process." A couple that runs an organization called the Giraffe Project in Langley, Washington depend entirely on intuition and synchronicity for their donations. They meet each bill from contributions and the owner seems to know intuitively when a big check is arriving that often covers the exact amount they need to pay a pressing bill. From A Wink From the Cosmos by Meg Lundstrom pg. 2

What spiritual principles/lessons can be gleaned from encounters with synchronicity?

Faith and hope in a higher power that is leading and guiding us and also a belief or reliance on a power higher than man. There is also the realization that spirit communicates with its creatures, anywhere, anytime and is capable of communicating with more than one person simultaneously. We also find that life principles and life lessons are often taught through coincidences.

Are questions sometime answered synchronistically?

Some synchronicities are more subtle and dreamlike, containing metaphors and allegories that teach us principles:

In her book The Tao of Psychology: Synchronicity and the Self (HarperCollins) Jean Shinoda Bolen writes about an incident that appears to have answered a question asked at a dinner party with friends. One woman said that occasionally, when she closed her eyes, frightening demonic images would appear. She wondered if she should confront them, examine them, or immediately turn her attention elsewhere. As they discussed the matter, a skunk that the hosts had never seen in the area started scratching at a sliding glass door in front of them, trying to get inside. The guests discussed how odd it was to see one trying to approach people and joked about how unlikely it was that anyone would open a door to one. It was only later that Jean and her husband realized that the skunk provided a synchronistic answer to the woman’s question. Just as allowing a skunk into a room would stink up a living space, entertaining demonic images in your mind would do the same to your mental inner space. (From A Wink from the Cosmos by Meg Lundstrom pg. 3, )

When do coincidences happen?

Coincidences can happen in the midst of a personal crisis or when you are deeply caught up or focused on something as if your thoughts are willing into materialization exactly what you need and the circumstances/situations to provide it; Meg Lundstrom puts it this way:

"Synchronicity seems to happen when you are intensely caught up in something that’s very deep -- for instance, falling in love makes it pop all over the place, ..."A lot of activities that tap into the deep mystery of life -- things like meditation, contemplative prayer -- also seem to stir it up." From A Wink From the Cosmos by Meg Lundstrom pg. 4

"Synchronicities are sometimes regarded as signs, and some people consciously use them to make decisions in life. In the novel The Celestine Prophecy, a bestseller which thrust synchronicity into the public consciousness, James Redfield says that all coincidences are significant because they point the way to an unfolding of our personal destiny." From A Wink From the Cosmos by Meg Lundstrom pg. 4

Conclusion

Synchronicity surfaces more and more in your life as you begin to experience the power of the spirit of God (Yahweh) within you. Via synchronistic experiences (or coincidences) in life we begin to realize that we are all inter connected regardless of time and space. Following your intuition (direct knowing) also often results in events coming together. Tasks and goals you want to accomplish in life somehow seem to happen without you consciously directing or controlling it. You may ask for a sign of whether you should move to a new town and take a new job, because somehow you feel stale where you are. Then after you make that request you may get a call from a friend in another city who has a great job offer for you (coincidence of course!) But by asking for a sign you have opened your mind to Spirit for answers and in this case you received the information via a coinciding event. The thought in your mind coincided with an externally manifested event !! Synchronicity, then, is another manifestation of the power latent in man to lead and guide us if we would only listen to the voice. You can learn to become more in touch with this "flow" to the extent that you can live by it and be totally dependent upon it.
